ALAC now is Open Source

ipodnano

Surprisingly, the company of the bitten apple liberated the Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) under a license of open code Apache. ALAC was developed like a códec for audio of high quality specially for iPhone, iPad, iPod, Mac and iTunes.

ALAC compresses the size of the audio files without losing quality, and it was developed in answer to the open alternative FLAC, which the Apple devices do not read.

Apple is apparently in accordance with the idea of that so that your códec is supported extensively, the most useful thing is to open it. This means that it will be possible to reproduce files compressed into ALAC  into devices and software that does not belong to Apple.

The decision will imply, possibly, that more developers use the format in their own projects, and that sharing the kept in the devices of the apple is easier.
